- 毗卢舍那
- (毘盧舍那, 毗卢舍那)
Vairocana, 'belonging to or coming from the sun' (M. W.), i. e. light. The [lang id =1028]真身 q. v. true or real Buddha-body, e. g. godhead. There are different definitions. Tiantai says Vairocana represents the [lang id =1028]法身 (sa) dharmakāya, Rocana or Locana the [lang id =1028]報身 (sa) saṃbhogakāya, Śākyamuni the [lang id =1028]應身 (sa) nirmāṇakāya. Vairocana is generally recognized as the spiritual or essential body of Buddha-truth, and like light [lang id =1028]徧一切處 pervading everywhere. The esoteric school intp. it by the sun, or its light, and take the sun as symbol. It has also been intp. by [lang id =1028]淨滿 purity and fullness, or fullness of purity. Vairocana is the chief of the Five (sa) dhyāni Buddhas, occupying the central position; and is the [lang id =1028]大日如來 Great Sun Tathāgata. There are numerous treatises on the subject. Other forms are [lang id =1028]毘盧; [lang id =1028]毘盧遮那 (or [lang id =1028]毘盧折那); [lang id =1028]吠嚧遮那; [lang id =1028]鞞嚧杜那.
